It will frequently not have the ability to resolve place names or to sort places by country/state.

With no ability to install the upgrade directly, I had to install the old version and do an upgrade again. If I did not have a good backup (the auto backup was of course corrupt also), I would’ve been screwed. I uninstalled, restored my data file from a backup and tried a second time and the upgrade worked. The bad-Upgrading to this version corrupted a lot of data. The ability to export part of the family tree is wonderful. Since I prefer to do my search directly from the source, this is not much of an issue. The integrated searching for Ancestry and Family search are generally good, but the Family Search fails to open frequently but not sure if that is an FTM or Family search issue. The reports available work good and the information has been correct. I seldom have had the app crash, but it does lock up every couple of weeks. One media file is about 2.5 GB and the other 1 GB. I split my family tree into 2 and neither one has more than 500 people. I run it on a 2014 MacMini with i7 with an SSD and it boots in less than 3 seconds. When I do, its during periods of non usage when even working on the Ancestry site gives me problems. The good-I generally have no problem with the Ancestry sync.

I find the software intuitive and quickly learnt - previous comments not withstanding! But I would caution against allowing Ancestry and Family Search to sync with FTM as too many inaccuracies can creep into your dataĪ reasonably priced package that compares well with its competitors.īiggest Pro: Ease of use (with training!).īiggest Con: Ancestry & Family Search synchronisation.įamily Tree Maker for Mac Review by mike d, I would recommend taking time to learn the software as it can be highly time consuming to have to re-input data if you had it wrong at first - particularily on crafting Source Documentation, and would suggest preparing a template for data input and sticking to it. I find this is the ideal software to run as a stand alone programme and do not sync with Ancestry or Family Search - I find these programmes have so many inaccuracies that can corrupt the data I hold. I have been a user of this programme for a number of years and upgraded to the later versions when taken over by MacKiev. I’d prefer to stay with FTM, but if these issues are not corrected….īiggest Pro: Ease of use - but I’ve been using FTM for 15+ yearsīiggest Con: Numerous current issues - slow, freezing (on a Mac!), relationship issues, media issues.įamily Tree Maker for Mac Review by Bijee,

I now also have purchased Reunions for the Mac and MyHeritage, both getting a trial run from a GEDCOM using my complete tree.

I’m hoping beyond hope that the next version (2021?) will correct the current hiccups without creating new ones. Perhaps the prior software included lots of “add-on” fixes rather than actually correcting the base software over time, I have no idea. It would seem a new team of software engineers are now working on this software who are unfamiliar (it seems) with the logic flow of the prior program. Obviously, there are more than a few newly created software “bugs” in the latest version.

This version locks up often, has changed the home person (me) to a second cousin, has trouble finding media located in the FTM Media folder (it looks in my Documents folder instead - now why is that?), it actually Locks up! On a Mac!. My tree includes just over 12,000 souls and (wait for it) takes over 10 seconds just to load. My Mac has 7 Terabytes of available storage, 32 Gigabytes of available RAM. I’m currently using version 2019 for the Mac. Ive been using FTM since 1995, and the Mac versions since 2015. Former displays and prints sections and whole (!) trees way better, no having to click around and shows long-term promiseīiggest Pro: Spacious and intuitive Interface, folders stored obviously on drive and maintains file names.įamily Tree Maker for Mac Review by D2King, For last 2 years I’ve also used Macfamily tree and MyHeritage. Basically it’s been a mystery since parted from Ancestry and no sign of change, so wouldn’t depend on it long term. Website is archaic, as is purchase and download, and communication.

Paid for hard copy manual 2 years ago, still no sign and no news available ( check this debacle out yourself) It’s hard to tell this company and its software actually exists in the real world. BUT problem is that living on legacy and lack of development since- nothing since 2019. often refuses link thumbnail to imported photo, otherwise very good as database. Increasingly some consistent minor glitches e.g. Great interface and easy to interact with. Family Tree Maker for Mac Review by msjoinms,
